this was passed my way via the united sons of toil vocalist/guitarist russell hall

this was the band he fronted before tusot...they were together for about six years...and released a few albums...a few 7"...contributed to some compilations...and did a split

this was the band's last album

after all this came to a stop...russell continued to play in the post-punk avant jazz instrumental band p'elvis...bass player jon terrones continued playing in a band called omn (and is now in a band called the suit)...and drummer jerry mcdougal went into art school (he was also member of a band called drive by wendy at the time)

why am i telling you all of this?...i like to share facts...and who knows...maybe they google their names from time to time to see if they're brought up anywhere (like you don't do that yourself)

and now for the music...

so if you dig some united sons of toil...and the melvins (pre-2000)...and shellac...and unwound...and hum...and sonic youth...and fugazi...

you know what....let's just say that this would be SGM's wet dream if we allowed it to dream (just be happy we don't...that's all i'm saying)

and if you'd ever wondered what it would sound like if steve albini would just admit his pop music sensibilities and cover the prince jam "when doves cry"...well...this is probably as close to that as you're going to get

in case you're not in the know...mr. peppermint (aka jerry haynes) was father to none other than gibby haynes (and if you're asking yourself "who's that?"...do us all a favor and just leave SGM now)

he had a CAPTAIN KANGAROO-type show that was on the air in dallas,tx which started out in the early part of the 1960s and ran until 1996

he passed away last year (9.26.11 to be exact)

musically...you can see mr. rogers singing these songs while changing his shoes and putting on his sweater

it could also be a lost butthole surfers album

this is a trio from lincoln,ne that got it's start in a band called dean armband (in the form of guitarist adam j. 2000 and drummer brendan mcginn)

they actually played under the dirty talker title for the first time as part of this

Shiner vs Slint. That's my take.
Which translates to "mature" mid-90's emo, which further translates to "big dynamics, clean-if-not-traditionally-'good'- vocals, crescendos, earnestness, swelling guitar lines, and the like". You know what I mean, right?
From Portland, this band was a pretty good amalgamation of what was pretty good about a pretty good subgenre of emo/indie; which means they were actually pretty great. As in, if you like Shiner, then you will like this a lot. I do.
Trivia: Jeremy Enigk of Sunny Day Real Estate sings on two songs on this record (duets, technically).

bands with names like ministry and kmfdm and nine inch nails and skinny puppy were all the rage

and then it just seemed to disappear after hitting it's stride in the mid-90s

it's probably for the best though...as musicians these days would probably just mess it up (ie: dubstep)...or just become parodies of themselves (ie: al jourgensen)

this was one of those bands that came out during the genre's heyday

this would fit in with your THE MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO TASTE and ANGST and BROKEN and LAST RIGHTS albums on the shelf quite nicely
