pissed jeans - hope for men

released in 2007

to be honest with you...when i'd first heard this band...i really wasn't all the impressed...someone on a messageboard has posted a link to their first full length (2005's shallow)...saying it was the best album they'd heard in awhile...blah blah blah...and being the biased kinda guy that i am...i gave it a download...gave it a quick listen...and didn't look at it again...

flash forward to a few days ago: i was listening to some random online radio station...not really paying all that much attention to it...and i got up and left the room...i was thirsty...i needed a beverage...and half way back i heard this sound coming from out of the computer's speakers...and the player wasn't telling me the name of the band...and i thought "could it be? have they gotten back together?! OH MAN! BONERS!"...the song was called "i've still got you (ice cream)" (and i'm going to remain vague on the band that i was thinking got back together...i want to see if you're up to speed on your shiny grey monotone-ness)...anyway...back to my story...so i went to youtube to see if there was a video for said song...and there it was...pissed jeans had made their way back into my life once again...but this time around they've managed to keep their tight and shiny presence in my ears

i've heard this described as rollins era black flag...sabbath-esque...flipper-esque...the list could go on and on...and it would all be correct

but once you listen...you'll know where the band's allegiance lies

so if you like your reptile on amphetamines...this be for you

fugazi: vietnamese slang for domestic situation

i'm going to be lame for a few moments
this is my love letter to fugazi

because...you see...if it weren't for this band...i would've more than likely never been lead out of metal land...i would've surrendered my life to having a beer gut and getting excited when some bar band covered slayer...and this very blog that you've been visiting probably wouldn't be here right now...actually...if it weren't for a friend of mine's girlfriend i would've never discovered fugazi...this was back in 1993...i was living in iowa...and said friend was a roomate...his name was james...his girlfriend's name amanda...she was a punk rock girl...had the armpit hair and everything...and at the time i had never been exposed to anything or anyone like that...i was intrigued...i was smitten...at first i was afraid to talk to her...crippling shyness does that to a person...so when i was finally able to move past "so..um..hi" phase...we would have some good talks...and one day i just randomly asked her to loan me a tape...any tape of her choosing...she left and came back with this cassette that had someone standing on their head on the cover..."fugazi eh?" i asked her...she told me to trust her...and i did...so i took the tape...and at first i couldn't get into it...for some reason my double bass sensibilities wouldn't let me...but then i wasn't able to get the basslines out of my head...and then it was the drumming...and then i was hooked...so...needless to say...musically...everything changed for me...i could wear my spiked arm bracelet (i've never actually owned such a thing...but a man can dream...right?) AND hang out in the "indie" part of the record store...and because of that...no one likes venturing into music stores with me

so...i guess that i should dedicate this post to amanda...wherever she is...and for all i know she's driving two kids around in a minivan nowadays...and the only thing tying her to her past is that small anarchy tattoo on her ankle

and now...i present to you...the fugazi discography...and as you can see by the picture...ian really wants you to have it

but dammit ian!
indefinite hiatus?!
this is for those that don't know...but need to find out

Space Streakings - Hatsu-Koi

Year: 1993
Label: Nux Organization / Charnel House

Last post of the night, then I gotta get to bed...it's getting late. And this one is per a request from my main man Double Jesus.
The story is that this was concocted by four video game programmers in Japan who went under the names Captain Insect, Karate Condor, Kame Bazooka, and Screaming Stomach and utilized bizarre instrumentation which was supposed to include, among other things, a gasoline powered guitar. Huh? Do I even need to tell you what it sounds like? Can't you guess?
It's bordering on all out noise, it's screeching, skronking, shouting, sampling, spazzy, and oh so Japanese. This frenzied mess could only be emitted from a culture that constrained. Honestly, I believe that.
If you like Melt Banana, Boredoms, Hatoba, CCCC, a little Merzbow, and a little Zeni Geva, this one will be right up your alley. Coincidentally, this was produced by KK Null.

They Were Tight Bros From Way Back

Year: the golden era of huffing
Label: some dude's answering machine tape

Following up on the Tight Bros From Way Back When post, from...well, way back when, I thought I'd post the impetus of that band's name, this recording. Depending on who you believe, this is either the greatest phone call ever captured on tape, or a fantastic hoax. I tend to think it's authentic merely because the minor character in the tape seems to be goading the major character to regale him with tales of satanism, heavy metal, fighting, and dodging the law. Seems to me, one dude has this "crazy friend" and decided he should record a typical phone call with the guy for posterity sake.
The "tight bros." in question, by the way, are Anton LaVey and King Diamond, who apparently have been buddies for a long time...at least according to this guy. Just do yourself a favor and listen.

By the way, while researching for an appropriate image for this post I noticed that Lo-Res Viscera had this on his blog like a year ago, proving that he is two steps ahead of the game, and deserving of your adoration. In case you've never visited that blog...stop being a retard and get over there already, the link is over there on the right hand side. I thought about not posting this out of respect for Mr. Viscera, but then I remembered that this is the internet, and its basically lord of the flies out here, so I would be remiss not to get it out there. Big ups Lo-Res Viscera.

Craw - Lost Nation Road

Year: 1994
Label: Choke Inc.

Seems like folks enjoyed the previous Craw post (it currently holds the record for most downloads for anything I've posted on here), so why not offer up their second album? Great idea! Jeez Gray, you're good looking and smart, that's a lethal combo, I bet the ladies can't keep their hands off.
This record veers off into crazy-land a little further than the Craw lp, and the band sounds even stranger than before. The vocals are genuinely disturbing in certain passages, and the lyrics seem to be cribbed from the Unabomber manifesto. Musically, they eschew some of the heaviness for wilder dynamics, but rest assured, it's still a heavy record. It will still take you by the back of the head and slam your face into the dashboard over and over and over again. It will still bum out most people in a dinner party type situation.
Do you really think I'm that good looking? Wow.

V/A - Mesomorph Enduros

Year: 1992
Label: Big Cat

This record seems to pop up in the blogosphere (...and I'm gayer having said that) every so often, so maybe you already have it. If not, it was a sampler that came out to showcase the creme de la creme of underground "alternative rock" as it were.
Here's the lineup:

Cop Shoot Cop
Melvins
The Jesus Lizard
Hammerhead
Helios Creed
Tad
Foetus Inc.
Thinking Fellers Union Local 282
Laughing Hyenas
Drunk Tank
Pain Teens
Of Cabbages And Kings
Barkmarket
Unsane
Motherhead Bug

Ever hear of any of those bands? Probably not huh, it's not like they get name-dropped EVERY FUCKING DAY on this blog.

ministry - in case you didn't feel like showing up

released 1990

"your windows will break, your pets will die, your neighbors will melt and you and your friends will soon fall into a pulsating heap on the ground, stimulants notwithstanding"
-some random guy

and you know...that's not all that far off from the truth about ministry back in the day...before al jourgensen kicked the habits and became an imitation of his former self...and i'm not saying that in a hateful way...i celebrate the entire ministry catalog (yes...even the early britpop days....but i'll stay far far FAR away from their last "release" of covers)...and after they'd released the psalm 69 album...it just seemed like they couldn't recapture that old piss and vinegar attitude anymore...until they finally released psalm 69 pt.s 2 (aka "rio grande blood")...and even then it was "yeah...but it's been done already al"

this was the air raid that was ministry back in the heyday...the debauchery...fire...bondage...al stumbling around the stage like a drunken buffoon...

and al's f-word laden rant at the end is just tops

so squeeze that backside of yours into your old leather bondage pants...lace up those boots...pour some tea into that jack daniels bottle...crank this to a respectable volume...and show the kids how it was done

white zombie - gods on voodoo moon

released in 1985

this was before they discovered ministry

they were more misfits and the cramps than a campy night at the metal disco

this would be at home in both the texas chainsaw massacre and a john waters movie

charles manson and divine at the prom

need i say more?

antlers - self-titled

released 2007

this band out of richmond,va is made of up several members from several bands (gregor samsa...mass movement of the moth!...if you are who you say you are...olive tree...resonance)

and of course the band sounds like little bits and pieces of the members other bands...but when they delve into the instrumentals (which makes up 98% of this)...they sound like the chicago instrumental band piglet

so if you like any of the bands that have ever played THE FEST in gainesville,fl...you'll dig on this

and they have horns AND a theremin
