When I was in high school I was in a straight edge hardcore band (believe it!) out of Winston-Salem, North Carolina (New Start Posse represent!), and when we went to record our first 7", we did what a lot of bands did in North Carolina, we called Caleb Southern in Charlotte and Jerry Kee at Duck-Kee Studios to see who could fit us in first. Turns out Caleb Southern was too busy (possibly mastering the AntiSeen album?), so we made the drive to Raleigh to record with Jerry. The other dudes in the band were not nearly as impressed as I was to see boxes containing the reels for Polvo (this very record), Archers Of Loaf, Geezer Lake, Celibate Commandos, Erectus Monotone, Seam, Superchunk, and every other North Carolina band worth a shit laying around the place, but it left an impression on me (obviously, I'm still talking about 17 or so years later). Polvo and those other bands were "real" bands to me, they were crafting interesting songs that seemed (to me at least) difficult to write and perform. So, it was cool to think that in some way we were fitting into that musical lineage. 

To his credit Jerry Kee suffered through our recording session (7 songs in one day I believe...hardcore dude), and was nice enough not to snicker as we trudged through mid-tempo jam after mid-tempo jam. All in all, a fun time, and now a memory you can share with your friends too.

I wonder if Polvo ever was back in the studio and Jerry said, "hey guys, you got to hear this shit" before playing them our record? Probably right?

Hammerhead - Amphetamine Reptile 7"s

Unfortunately for all involved, this is not a complete collection of all the Hammerhead 7"s released by Amphetamine Reptile, as I am missing "Duh, The Big City" (also referred to as the "Earth I Won't Miss" record)7" that came out in 1994. Sucks, but I never had then, and I still don't have it now. If anyone out there does happen to have a copy floating around and wouldn't mind sharing, hit me up. Also, there are two split 7"s they put out, one with Godheadsilo, and one with Halo Of Kitten, as well as a few compilation tracks, but I think this blog has already posted all of that material along with the full lengths, so aside from the aforementioned "Duh, The Big City" record, we're pretty much covered.

What you do get are the first three Hammerhead 7"s; "U.V. / Peep", which was a picture disc in the Amphetamine Reptile Research and Development Series and might be (for sentimental reasons alone as it was the first Hammerhead record I ever heard) my favorite of all their records. "Load King" was a little more polished, but still a dirty rock take on hardcore. Then "Evil Twin" was a tour only 7", that later was repackaged as a cdep and 10" with the older and live songs tacked on. You're getting the 7" version.

So there you go, enjoy. I don't see how you couldn't, Hammerhead slays.

this would fit in quite nicely amongst all of your dazzling killmen/deadguy/kittens/unsane albums

and yes...that is a trombone you hear

and for those of you not in the know...these folks come to us out of tallahassee,fl...made up of 7 members...and are known to crazy wacky things like take the stage dressed as island natives and eating babies (maybe that last part was made up...maybe it wasn't....)

actually...i don't think that i really need to write anymore...i should've had you all at "dazzling killmen/deadguy/kittens/unsane"

i was recently digging through all of the crap i had on the computer...and i came across a folder marked "stuff"...i'd downloaded all of this awhile back and had forgotten about it

this is like finding a $100 bill in your pants pocket...and then taking that $100 bill to a subway and ordering up 2 foot long meatball subs...and when it comes time to pay for your purchase the counter person says "no,sir...you're money isn't any good here"

in case you're wondering...this is all a very good thing

vermonstress was a 2 day music festival put on by sub pop in burlington,vt back in 1992 (in case you didn't quite grasp that by the post title)

i guess you could say this is the east coast version of the international pop underground convention (which was held in olympia,wa a year prior...you can find a compilation of said ipuc inside this blog)

though this isn't the fest in it's entirety...it's a large sum of it (a total of 17 bands appeared)

picture it...sicily...1935: i was all up in myspace's guts...hopping from profile to profile...when i came across this very band (a drum and bass duo from france)...and their choice of pictures for a cover caught my eye...apparently santa has a problem with too much "christmas cheer" and was busted looking for some in the bathroom of some seedy bar (again)...but i'm getting away from my point (as i've been known to do from time to time)....and then i'd seen that the band had some pretty awesome myspace "friends" (the first 2 are unsane and godheadsilo)...and that in turn made one of my nipples erect (the left one...if you're curious)...and then i took a peek over at their influences...and then it happened...righty was coaxed out of it's sheath: godheadsilo...melvins...killdozer...pachinko...dazzling killmen...karp...shorty....

it's as if they were all like "hey...i found this blog...let's tease it by saying that we like bands it likes...get them over to our apartment...steal their wallet and clothing...force them to stand amongst our lawn gnome collection...put the pictures on the internet...and then drop them off in an alley outside of a club called the blue oyster"

and there was no way i was letting that happen again

so still a little leery i went up to their myspace player and clicked on a song called "no time for a joke"...and i suddenly felt warm all over...and i was taken back in time to the year 1995...and i was sitting on my couch smoking pot and listening to music through headphones...and as i stood there looking at myself doing this i began to hope that i didn't open my eyes and see me standing there because that might freak me out a little bit...so i slowly backed towards the door...and as i passed the kitchen i'd seen that i was making pizza rolls..."oh maaaan! of course i'd be making pizza rolls" i said to myself....

dammit
there i am getting away from my point again

so yeah...all the mentioning of bands that this blog likes was justified

and i sent them a message saying "hey...you like the same stuff i do...how about sending me a little something i can put on the blog"...and just like that...

godheadsilo is all over this...mixed with some early fudge tunnel...and you've seen all of the other bands mentioned so i don't really need to cover any more bases

and now...i'm gonna go back and see if there are any more pizza rolls left

and it seems that no one had any sort of problems with vol.1...but if any arise with vol.2...get up out of your chair...and go into the bathroom...and then stand in front of the sink...just stare at yourself in the mirror...no words...just stare...and let all of your tension and nihilism bubble to the surface...just stare hard at yourself...and once you realize that you've now become the cover for the black flag album DAMAGED...just walk away and pour yourself a cold glass of milk...then return to the chair in front of your computer...and leave a comment

this is one of those albums that i listen to at least once a month

it makes some nice driving through the country music...just driving along...taking it all in...OHMANTHATFUCKINGDEERALMOST...as i was saying...just cruising along...breathing in the air

these chi-town boys sound like don caballero (if damon che took the ego down to about a 5)...like faraquet sans vocals...like a more cohesive hella...volta do mar...tortoise (just throwing some other names out there)

sadly...this was the band's only album

so if you like the words "math" and "rock" put next to each other....

Ed Hall - Albert

I do believe this post will punch out your Ed Hall dance card and complete the discography. I think. But then again, I'm not a fucking calculator, so do your own math.

Musically, it's the first Ed Hall full length record, and most likely their most bizarre. It's that ole' Texas styled psycho-noise-cowpunk-free form-punk that we all grew up on. The same stuff your mother gently sung into your vanilla little ears (unless your not a Cauca-zoid, in that case, insert "caramel", "chocolate", or "butterscotch" depending on the ethnic background of your choice) to soothe you to sleep. The sweet sweet music of a nurturing home. Ahhhhh...memories.

When I put this into ITunes the song titles were all "track 1" and "track 2" and shit, so if that happens to you too, here are the actual song titles.

these folks out of the twin cities (st.paul/minneapolis,mn) play something very much like don caballero mixed with a little bit of not so out there primus along with a small dash of the dazzling killmen groove

this is one of those "featuring members of..." bands...it's made up of bass player jeremy kuecker of the band v9r9d (if you hadn't already figured that one out)...guitarist dave erb of the band sicbay...and drummer jack kalyuzhny of the band the deaf

so if you like any of that "midwest math/noise rock" business...take my hand and i'll lead you...don't be frightened

Cows - The Missing Letter Is You

It's been a minute since we relished in the power of Cows hasn't it? Too long if you asked me. 

So, here's the second to last thing they released (of new material anyway), which was a picture disc 10" on Chicago's sometimes-awesome/sometimes-putting-out-Blue-Meanies records label Thick. Maybe this record is somehow "less gnarly" than the older records, but still, if you put "Death In The Tall Weeds" into your D.J. set this Saturday night, I guarantee the ladies will bolt off the dance floor with extreme prejudice. It's not friendly or fun. They never were, even though everything they did was done with a smile on their faces. 

You know Cows, so you either got this one or didn't. Here it is in case you missed it the first go around.
