Boilermaker - Boilermaker 7"

Label: Wrenched
Year: 1993

Boilermaker's second 7" release, and probably most noteworthy because Rob Crow played some guitar on it. Quite possibly the name Rob Crow doesn't ring a bell, and that's fine, no big whup, but I bet if you look him up on the Google Machine, you'll realize, "oh yeah...that guy".
Musically this is Boilermaker before they got their sound dialed in, and before the big catchy songs and arresting vocals. If you're a fan of the band then you will most likely enjoy it (duh, right? I mean, I even felt like a retard as I was typing that, because by default a fan of the band...well...you get it), but if you're trying to "get into" Boilermaker in chronological order you might want to rethink that approach and go to the albums first, then find your way back here.

Bitch Magnet - Ben Hur

Label: Glitterhouse
Year: 1990

Essential. This is one of those records that you can start tracing a lot of your favorite bands back to. Anybody in the genres of post hardcore, math rock, noise rock, or basically any of the loud/quiet/loud stuff on this blog, owes quite a debt of gratitude to Bitch Magnet. Not to mention the name Bitch Magnet, that was a tough one to explain to the often overly sensitive flowers who would be around bands like this one.
Also of personal note: Bitch Magnet qualify as a "North Carolina band" (although originally from Ohio), which allows them entry into my own vaunted Top Ten List Of North Carolina Bands, that I keep meticulously updated. They are no doubt, very proud.

California Love + Gehenna - Split 7"

Label: A389
Year: 2010

California Love is a good name for a band that trades on roaring, metallic hardcore complete with atonal guitar "solos" and blast beats. California Love would also be a good name for a swingers resort near Lake Tahoe. FYI, the band has members of Look Back And Laugh, Dead And Gone, Talk Is Poison, Mindless Mutant, Needles, and others.
Gehenna plays Motorhead x Unbroken style hardcore with vocals that sound like a sand storm rolling across your face. You are no doubt privy to their "legendary" antics, but regardless, the music speaks for itself. Raging.
A389 continues their track record of releasing the most scathing bands going, kudos to them, go visit their catalog.

ancient chinese secret - caveat emptor

released 1999

seeing as how the posting of some spazz awhile back went over pretty well...

hmmmmmmmmmm

let's see

the best way to describe this....

bikini kill frontwoman kathleen hanna fronting spazz

that seems to fit

this was a trio that included spazz vocalist/bassist chris dodge and ex-capitalist casualties drummer matt martin and vocalist lydia dodge (which turns out is chris' wife)

this was the band's only album

enjoy

melvins/patton oswalt split 7"

released 2006

i'm just going to assume that you know who both the melvins and patton oswalt are

on one side...you get the melvins doing what the melvins like to do from time to time...which is covering other band's material...and in this case...it's the sonics song "boss hoss" (you even get to hear the entire thing get played in reverse as well)

and on the other side...you get comedian patton oswalt dealing with a few folks that like to talk on their cell phones during inappropriate moments the way people that talk on their cell phones during inappropriate moments should be dealt with
