Cool post. A very good comp but typical of Rhino in that it leans a too far towards the mainstream - Ultravox, Pretenders, Kate Bush etc. There's a lot of major label bands considering it's supposed to be 'dispatches from the underground'.

Not only that, but some of SGM's most revered bands were up and running in the 80s and didn't get on there - especially Big Black, Scratch Acid and the Melvins. At least they found room for 'Moving To Florida', I guess.

SGM has already done a fine job in documenting the true 80s underground (Kilslug comes to mind as a great example). I'm sure you guys have a better handle on what was out there than most.

Hey, the logical progression from the radio show is a 'Best of SGM' comp, right? Congratulations on the show by the way, it's the tits.

I always thought this was kind of a misstep in the great Rhino boxsets, who usually take the route of showcasing more obscure tracks (Nuggets) even when they are covering popular bands - see the "Where the Action Is" boxset for a perfect example. In this boxset as well as the "No Thanks" boxset put out around the same time, I felt like Rhino was being pretty lazy by just taking the "hit" by each cult band of the 80's across 4 CDs and allowing us to purchase it. I'm not actually sure who the audience really is for this boxset, maybe kids whose parents don't listen to good music?
