melvins - salad of a thousand delights

released 1992

with all of the hoopla surrounding the melvins on this blog as of late...i'm starting to think they need to have their own section on the forum

and now i'm gonna take out the soapbox again and put in my 2 cents...and unless you'd read my rant back in the SINGLES 1-12 post...this will all be new to you folks (though a slightly shortened version):

i've only managed to see the melvins live once...back in 1998 when they were part of the ozzfest...they played the second stage in front of a bunch of nu metal fans...and what you think happened did...during the duration of their half hour set they were met with a constant "get the fuck off the stage! you fucking suck!" and whatever other monosyllabic phrases they could muster...and during their time on stage they managed to play one song (dragging the already epic sounding "boris" out and making it more epic-er) and take the already at a level 10 of pissed off-ed-ness and raised it to 20 (and i will agree with "mars"...it's still one of the most punk rock things i've ever seen)...i'm pretty sure i was the only one there watching the whole thing with a smile on my face

i also met the band once at a truck stop in peru,il (sapp bros...for those that are curious)...some friends and i were sitting in the adjoining burger king when i pointed out a guy walking across the parking lot with hair like buzz's...turns out it wasn't just a guy with hair like buzz...it was buzz...so the friends i was with and i went over and talked to them (mostly to buzz and dale...their bass player at the time...mark deutrom...just stood off to the side and looked as if he was talking to himself)...they were on their way to canada to play with the band skeleton key...i remember buzz asking me if i'd seen the compilation of police chases from the tv show cops he'd picked up off a shelf...i said "no"...he said "you really need to. it's awesome"...and then they asked us if we had any money...i managed to get a copy of nirvana's BLEACH signed (dale just signed his name...buzz signed "king buzzo likes kurdt cobain"...mark didn't sign it)...and then they all piled into their van and drove away

and though i said that they were pretty boring nowadays...i believe that they play the music for themselves...and don't really care what anyone has to say about it...and i think they've earned that right in their 27 years of existence

the melvins are the kind of band that'll call it quits when all of the members eventually die off (or maybe they'll have all of their heads cryogenically frozen ala futurama)

and now...SALAD OF A THOUSAND DELIGHTS

"There is no band that changed my perspective of music of music like the Melvins. I'm not joking. I think that they're the future of music... and the present and the past."
dave grohl and kurt cobain (from the back of the box)

and with that being said...i would say this: dave grohl...how can you explain the foo fighters then?

this was a show that took place in olympia,wa at a place called the north shore surf club on may 16 1991

and if you know anything about a melvins gig (well...back then anyway)...then you know what you're going to see here (and that being dale crover playing the drums in what looks like a red speedo...a very sweaty king buzzo...and joe preston playing on a stage the size of a kitchen table surrounded by "fans"...aka "people that don't know when to take the hint that they're not wanted on stage")

1 - antitoxidote
2 - euthanasia
3 - zodiac
4 - oven
5 - if i had an exorcism
6 - boris
7 - kool legged
8 - wispy
9 - it's shoved
10 - anaconda
11 - we reach
12 - hog leg

if you have netflix you can watch this video "on demand", i.e. on your computer. i did just that a couple weeks ago, and have to say i couldn't make it all the way through this whole set. it's fun to see this line-up rocking way out, but ultimately, it's hard for me to sit and watch an entire hour long set staring at a computer screen.

you should get netflix. you can watch "man on a wire" on demand as well.

are you sleeping with netflix?

either way...someone's getting plugged

and yeah...this video is kind of hard to sit through all at once...it took me a total of 3 times to make it all the way through...and not because of it being bad or anything...it's just kind of hard to put this on and then kick back and enjoy

You're right. At this point they have earned the right to do whatever the fuck they want. I've always just forgiven the "Colossus of Destiny" type of doom-noise dumps that they take every now and then because i know that there is always another "(A) Senile Animal" or "The Maggot" right around the corner.
