Rival Schools - New Video
Ethical, no, moral dilemma. There is a new Rival Schools song/video floating around the internets, and this conjures strange feelings in this old body of mine. On one hand, I have steadfast devotion, and the utmost respect for all things concerning Walter Schreifels, Sammy Siegler, and Cache Tolman (Ian Love...not so much). They can do the proverbial "no wrong".But then, then...I have my ears and my eyes. They are trying to tell me this is no good, but can I trust them? Are they merely saying this because everyone in the band but Walter are wearing sunglasses? Or are they saying this because the song doesn't really go anywhere?Oh, this is a tough one.So, internet, I turn to you in order to make up my failing mind. What should I think if this?
I must say that as a huge RS fan I was a bit worried after reading your description but I actually like the song. It might just be the mood I'm in but right now this doesn't really sound any different than their old stuff, though it definitely doesn't rock as hard as Used For Glue. I am excited for the new record. Any chance you could reup their rarities collection you posted in '08?
ReplyDeleteYou may be right, I may have such high standards for Rival Schools that I can't acknowledge a hot jam straight out of the box anymore. My defenses are up.
ReplyDeleteThe links for the Rival Schools rarities still worked as of this morning, so try again. If it's still a problem let me know.
Don't let your nostalgic side fool you this is terrible!
ReplyDeleteSad really.
The old wisdom that Walter can never do wrong is also applicable here. Very good appetizer for the EP that comes Nov 18 btw.
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind that it's just the single. Used For Glue, the lead single from the last album wasn't that bad either, but it also wasn't that representative for the sound of the album in my opinion. Used For Glue just wasn't the album highlight. This may be valid for Shot After Shot, who knows?
I never really listened to them, even though I remember getting excited when I heard about these guys having a new band and all that back in 03 or whenever it was. But anyway, this song is pretty solid.
ReplyDeleteThe video is horrible... but I really do like the song. Sounds like their previous material to me.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with the Ian Love comment. Cardia was good, but that's about it.
And WTF was up with Walters solo album? Yawn.
I like the song too. The video not so much. I also really like Walter's new solo album.
ReplyDeleteman, the song is ok. kinda QOTSA but, well, walter was doing this songs on this style when joss homme still has long hair...to be true, i feel its "the pretty ordinary song" the label choose to push the band for the "young new consumers". nothing strange, nothing wrong. hope the record make justice to RS past.
ReplyDeleteall good for ya,
I agree with the "kinda QOTSA" comment. Nostalgia has no place here. Walter hasn't made a new Quicksand or Biscuits record and probably never will. This is classic Rival Schools ... sounds alot like High Acetate. I do love Walter's shit. Always feel like "I" should be adapting, not him. Besides ... as for the video, he has to appeal to the new generation of record buyers... all you fuckers on this blog will just download the record anyway.
ReplyDeleteband's never been interesting. still aren't. bland radio rock.
