and that's just what happened the day i decided to slip this album into the stereo in a room of people that were either on acid or the pot (i was on the pot...and i have to tell you that this was one of my favorite things to listen to while high...and i don't know what that says about me)

so picture it...everyone is having a good time...just going with whatever they happened to be going through at the moment...and then suddenly the song "spasmolytic"
comes over the speakers...and the voice of a demon starts saying things like "kicking the habit" and "sorry..i'm fucked up inside" over music that could be best described as an exorcism set to music

things got uneasy real quick

and then folks started making their way to the door

and i was ok with that...more chips for me

i don't exactly remember how it was i was turned onto this album...it was my first foray into skinny puppy-land...and soon afterward i was hunting down everything i could find on cassette (why on cassette?...i don't know...it just seemed as if they were harder to find back then...and i had built up quite the collection...but i somehow managed to lose them over the years)

in my opinion...when it came to the industrial scene back in the late 80's/early 90's...skinny puppy were the scariest to listen to...i mean...sure...you could probably dig a little and maybe come across something a little edgier and whatnot...but at the time...you had your kmfdm..your nine inch nails..your ministry..and they all seemed to be looking for some sort of mainstream acceptance...but even when it looked as if skinny puppy were trying to do the same with their THE PROCESS album...it was the most anti-mainstream mainstream album of that time period (am i calling skinny puppy a mainstream band? if only all mainstream bands sounded like that)

well...i've rambled on long enough

and just so you know...you don't have to be some aging goth or hot topic worker (who am i kidding...nowadays they have no idea who this band is) to dig this band

and just for the record...i am neither of those things

Dragged By Horses - Deep In The Woods

I had never heard of Dragged By Horses until yesterday, when my girlfriend brought in their LP from the record store where she works.

My first thought was WTF? Then, I thought Shellac? Then, Jonestown? Young Widows maybe? All I know is it sounds gritty & real & vintage (even though this album was released in '07).

Here's Gas Huffer's debut album titled "Janitors of Tomorrow". I really can't uptalk this album enough.. it's just a frantic, schitzophrenic mess of gloriously catchy, comedy laced rock music. This is a favorite of mine in terms of Gas Huffer material as it's probably the most furious thing they ever released - it's like a shot to the head.. you'll listen to it and then wonder what the hell just happened. This was released in 1991 by Empty Records.

Debut album from 5 piece from Champaign, IL. Only lasted about 4 years and produced 2 albums. Style is on the more melodic of say the Am Rep bands with I guess a similarity to Chokebore. Mix in with that a bit of Hum & Johnboy and I think that gives a fair assumption. They still have an old website that can be checked out here. Good solid album.

This band had a drum machine. Ensue Big Black comparisons. But they're not Big Black! Are they an alternative rock band? Yep! Noisy? Yep! Do they have a drum machine? Yep! Diagnosis - poor man's Big Black. Of course whenever a band reach iconic status then any band that sound a bit like them are going to be lamented. However this album does stand on it's own two feet. Sure they have a drum machine but haven't gone for the guitar sound that Albini & co are reputed for. I would also add into the mix Foetus and a few industrial bands of the era.

V/A - Loud and Ugly vols. 1 + 2

Label: Bovine

Year: 1993, 1995

Bovine Records spent a couple years being completely unfuckable-with, everything that label shit out was a pure gold steamer with little diamond corn kernels in it. Pure perfection.

So it's of no surprise that these two compilation 7"s they released were also big ole piles of hot bullion as well. Solid flaxen poo.

Volume One is a battle royale between the rock megalopolis' of Madison and DeKalb, Wisconsin, which, yeah, is pretty much Holmes and Ali of Wisconsin towns, so you know you're in for a real treat. The bands are:

Festering Rinyanyons - best described as "Midwestern noise rock", like a Sicbay or something

Mercury Players - twangy slabs of pig fuck, kinda Cows meets Surgery meets Crows

Pachinko - underrated band, Unsane by way of Johnboy, super good

Thug - the label owner's band, brutal noisy hardcore that's as ugly as it is spiteful

Volume Two doesn't let up in the least, in fact it pretty much drops the hammer. Drops it square in the middle of your face. The bands are:

Eyehategod - my personal favorite of their jams probably because it's relatively short and upbeat by their standards, I actually stole the verse riff in an old band I was in (full disclosure; I actually also stole the main riff to the song "Blank" for another song in the same band...I was pretty heavy into Eyehategod for a minute).

Floor - they have never released a bad song, and this crawling hatred is no exception

Despise You - some power violence to cleanse the Southern fried sludge out of your ears

Apartment 213 - and more power violence, this time with that serial killa lean.

Thug - I guess if you put out the records you can put your band on as many of these as you fucking want. That being said, this is the best Thug song ever, and might be the best song on this whole collection. Creeping death with added harmonics! P.S. enjoy that lock groove at the end of the song.

They don't really make em like this anymore. And by "they" I, of course mean the Illuminati and the Bilderberg Group. Well, them and the Jewish bankers who secretly run the world's finances, holding us all hostage to their diabolical whims, mere puppets in a high stakes charade of New World Order.

Did you know that in the 1990's these shadowy convivials sought to quell anti-American sentiment in Western Europe by infiltrating independent rock music and introducing the "lo-fi" phenomenon? It's true! Look it up! I mean, why else does Guided By Voices utilize traditional Mason symbology in their album art? Huh?! Why?! And why do you suppose Pavement pay lip service to the Ante-Nicene clergy in the song "Summer Babe"? Merely coincidence? I think not!

Look deeper friends, the truth is out there. Oh, it's out there, and it's meeting every summer at a remote camp in the Redwoods to plot global financial holocaust for the working class.

Or, you can go on thinking this record is just a simple fractured pop collection with nary a sinister intent. Maybe that's what you need to believe in order to sleep at night.

and of course i ordered the band's t-shirt with the album cover on it...which got me all kinds of looks when i'd wear it around town (and i still plan on getting it tattooed somewhere on my body because i'm a rebel like that)

take the kittens BAZOOKA AND THE HUSTLER album...any big black album...any unsane album...the dazzling killmen FACE OF COLLAPSE album...and shove them all into an empty paint can...weld it closed...shake it up and throw it into a crowded room

Dead And Gone - T.V. Baby

Label: Prank

Year: 1995

People don't ever mention Dead And Gone when they talk about the heyday of Prank Records, instead all you hear about is the fastcore stuff. And, with the exception of His Hero Is Gone, this is easily the best record Prank ever put out. Which, but the by, is no small feat, as they were pretty much killing it in the mid-Nineties with releases from Damad, Word Salad, Initial State, and In/Humanity among a long roster of crusty, raw, dirty hardcore. Prank was a great label, and was there to give the hardcore scene a kick in the ass when things were getting a bit too "emotional", and people felt like rolling on the floor and having three day zine workshops was revolutionary. Oh Nineties, you were so so ridiculous.

But I digress.

Maybe in context of what was happening around them Dead and Gone were even better. Maybe their dark, moody, fractured, tense, noise-rock approach to early Neurosis was that much cooler because they didn't sound like anyone else. Maybe? Whatever their secret, Dead And Gone delivered the goods, you got fast, slow, heavy, noisy, all the key ingredients. It's like the line from the Blues Brothers, "oh we got both kinds (of music) here, country and western". Dead and Gone gave you all the sounds you were looking for minus all the corny baggage of the era.

This record stands up today as a classic, and I think you'll like it too. And if it helps, Billie Joe Armstrong of old Gilman Street compatriots Green Day (whatever happened to that band? I thought for sure they would get really popular, but after Lookout! Records I never saw hide nor hair of them...oh well) helped record this record, and the sound is fantastic. The dudes in this band were also known affiliates of: Needles, Talk Is Poison, California Love, Mindless Mutant, Look Back And Laugh, Creeps On Candy, Blatz, Year Future, and Night After Night. Also, this is the cd version which includes the band's first 7" at the end.

Cop Shoot Cop - Peel Session 1991

That John Peel and his sessions, I mean, what can you say? That show captured pretty much the cream of the crop (I suppose they also got the cream of the crap as well) over the course of more than 4000 recordings. When I was a kid, I used to always wonder "what the fuck is a 'Peel Session'?", having no idea that Peel was a last name. I assumed it was some sort of musicians slang for a quick recording or something. I was (an still am) a very simple and mostly stupid person, so you'll have to excuse me. But my first exposure were the albums and cassettes that all had the same generic gray/black/white covers with the band name across the top and then listed every other band Peel had recorded in a box below. Remember those? They were ubiquitous in every record store in the 80s, but I had no clue really what that cover meant. I would just think, "oh Siouxsie and Banshees have a new 12" out?", and then go about looking for D.R.I. cassettes or something. Actually, that's not really true, because after "Four Of A Kind" I wasn't in the market for any new D.R.I., so I rarely scoured the bins looking for them. C.O.C., maybe, but not D.R.I.

Sidebar: bands today don't employ the acronym as moniker like they used to. Why is that?

Back to this post: So here's the first Cop Shoot Cop Peel Session (they recorded again in 1992), and it's four songs, all bruisers, all pristinely recorded, and all awesome. If you're a fan, you really need these versions, they're great.

Seems like a lot of dudes cooler than I'll ever be, think this band stinks. Or at least think the dudes in the band stink. Or something stinks, somewhere, could be me. For real, it could be me. I made a sizzling pot of chili for dinner tonight which my wife commented "tasted a lot like beer" then adding, "the kids should sleep well tonight". The alcohol cooks out though right, so it's not like it's child abuse or anything.

Chili is great, I could eat that shit morning, noon, and night. Beans, onions, peppers, tomatoes, beer, ground turkey, spices, cheese, sour cream, scallions, cilantro, garlic...fuck. That's what life is all about, eating chili you know? And I mean that both literally and metaphorically, as most of my missives work on two levels. Or at least they're bi-level. Maybe I mean split level instead.

What does that have to do with this? And (started a sentence with "and", so what?) what does chili have to do with And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead?

That's for you to figure out.

I *heart* the internet & this album is great! Without the internet there would have been little chance in hell that I would have been able to track this LP down & I'm glad I did. One of those strange albums that was recorded many years before it was released. Originally recorded in 1983 but not making it to vinyl until 1990. Probably ahead of their time the album has a post punk sound but to me it doesn't sound like 1983. Formed in Cleveland by the late & great Jim Jones and joined by ex-Kneecappers singer Chris Yarmock, bassist Charlie Ditteaux and drummer Linda Hudson. This should appeal to all that visit here.

Chain Gang - Perfumed

At some point I remember seeing a request for this record in the forum section, it was awhile back. The name of the band didn't ring any bells, so I went along with business until, while rifling through some cds, looking for songs for the next SGM Radio show (Sundays afternoons!), I came across this one. I have no idea where it came from, when I got it, or why I have it. I don't think I've ever listened to it, until I put it on the computer. Mysterious, no?

And don't let the release date fool you, the songs on this compilation were recorded as far back as 1976 all the way through 1988. What is it, you ask? Uh, good question. The band was from New York, and were contemporaries of all the first wave New York punk and new wave bands, so you have some of that sound in here. Maybe some Television mixed with Pere Ubu (I realize that strays from New York), some straight up shouting, noisy punk with some Johnny Thunders bar rock thrown in? I'm not sure. This genre ain't my thing, so I'm not sure how to describe this accurately.

It's interesting, I'll say that much. It's a missing link of sorts in the New York music timeline, and if you're an adventurous listener I think you'll dig it.

i was turned onto this illinois two-some via a mixtape a friend of mine from new york made me (she used the songs "high-fiving mf" and "bound for the floor")

and after giving the tape a thorough listening...i went right out and bought this album

i liked to tell people that this was an unreleased nirvana album...and most of them believed me...even the friend that was a huge (read: HUGE) nirvana fan (what can i say...some of the people i used to hang out with were a little thick...and by that i mean "not so smart"...perv)

the band always got compared to nirvana...and for good reason...they took everything that was nirvana and doled it out between 2 people...and they did it right...from dave's bombastic drumming...to kurt's chainsaw guitars and vocals...to krist's plodding basslines

you've got no taste in music
and you really love our band....

Just found out about this today so I thought I would post his album from 2006 which I only discovered in 2008, but certainly became the most played album while travelling around that year. Fuckemos + Motards - Split 7"

Four songs, 45 rpm, total awesomeness.

The Fuckemos have been posted here before, so you should have a general idea what they're all about, but if not, think warped, countrified, noise rock. The vocals being the real standout, as they are tweaked and modified to sound like a dying version of the Buffalo Bill character from Silence Of The Lambs. "It puts the lotion on its skin", indeed!

Motards are ripping garage-punk not unlike a Supersuckers, or maybe a bit of Zeke. Good stuff.

But honestly, the whole thing is over in under seven minutes, so put it on as the soundtrack for your next bowel movement and see if it doesn't get shit moving (literally), and if not, oh well, you can always go back to your old standby, Bette Midler. Life could be worse. What am I even talking about? For real, why are my fingers typing this shit? I need to stop. Good night.

Daddy Longhead - Cheatos

Label: Touch And Go

Year: 1991

Haven't posted any acid baked Texan music lately, so I thought I'd remedy that situation for you real quick. Daddy Longhead was a side project of Butthole Surfer Jimbo Young for his wealth of bizarre music. And while this is less harsh than the Butthole Surfers, you can certainly hear their fingerprints on it. I would say, take the "Texas weird" of Butthole Surfers, combine that with the guitar rave ups of Helios Creed, and then play some straight up FM radio rock in the distant background (Allman Brothers "cover" not withstanding), and you get the idea.

The three dudes on this particular recording have spent time in the following (very impressive) bands; Butthole Surfers, Big Boys, Scratch Acid, Rapeman, Didjits, Ministry, Euripides Pants, DDT, Jackofficers, Areola 51, and Honky. Pretty good right? Also this was produced by Paul Leary, and has guest drumming on a couple tracks by King Coffey, in case those band names weren't enough for you.

I will say, if you are turned off by guitars soloing, and soloing, and soloing, you might want to stay away, but if you enjoy a good six string freak out, then this one is for you.

you know that whole math rock thing that sprang up in the midwest during the late 1980's?...these boys from st.louis,mo kicked everything up a notch (though they'd fall under the heading of math rock's burlier old brother that goes by the name of mathcore along with bands like slint/don caballero...and later influencing bands like the dillinger escape plan/coalesce/converge)

and when they they split up back in 1995...members went onto play in bands such as colossamite/sicbay/brise-glace

Dinosaur Jr - Live At The Blue Note 04-12-06

Year: 2006

Please excuse the soundman during the first track, he's still farting around with levels. Beyond that, what you get is pretty good quality (my only complaint is that the vocals are too high in the mix) set. Maybe a B-? Sure. B-.

The tracks date back to "Dinosaur" (1985) all the way through "Bug" (1988), which, I suppose, is in deference to the O.G. lineup. And that's fine and all, but it means you get nothing off of "Green Mind", and no offense to Lou Barlow, but that record slays and it's be nice to hear some of those choice jams. I have now idea if the newly reformed band is playing material that the three current (and original) members didn't all play on, or if they are staying away from those songs. I don't know because I was never a huge fan of their Neil Youngish take on sludge, so the nostalgia trip isn't all that inviting. That's not to say they aren't a great band, or that their records aren't good, or that J Mascis can't shred my face off. That's all true stuff, it's just that at the actual time of their existence they were a little too "soft" (that's what she said) for me. I mean, when you compare them to Corrosion Of Conformity, or whatever I was bumpin' out of the jam box at the jump ramp session, then yes, they are kinda soft. But, in the pantheon of modern rock music, they will go down as an all time great, deftly melding pop hooks in some gnarly rock, buried under a mountain of screaming, feedbacking guitar.

the big boys were a band out of austin,tx during the late 70's/early 80's...they brought the funk to punk...and are considered one of the first hardcore bands as well as having a helping hand in the making of skate rock

after the band split up in 1984...members went onto bands like scratch acid (drummer rey washam)...poison 13 (guitarist tim kerr and bassist chris gates)...and cargo cult (vocalist randy turner....who died back in 2005 from hepatitis c)

so if you're down with stuff like early red hot chili peppers...minutemen...any old school punk in general...

This particular bootleg is not of as high a fidelity as the previous two that have been posted on this site, but it's certainly listenable, maybe a C+ audience recording. Also, the mp3 tags are fooked, and I promise that I tried to fix them, but my meager computing skillz left a lot to be desired. Maybe when you load this into the mp3 player of your choice, you can fix them.

Beyond that, what more need to be said? It's a fucking Unwound show. What the fuck? Fuck shit up.

Daisy Chainsaw - Hope Your Dreams Come True

Year: 1992

First off, this particular version of this release is an anomaly. It is neither the original 12" version from Deva Records, nor the maxi-cd (remember those?) released by One Little Indian. Instead it was labeled as "US promo cdep", with no record label. So, your guess is as good as mine.

Musically, I had forgotten what this band sounded like, but was under the impression it was kind of a Babes In Toyland type racket. And while that vibe is present on to songs, the other two have a much lazier, hazier, goth-inspired, 4ad type English steez.

Not really my thing, not really my thing at all, but I figured that some folks who frequent this ghetto of a website might remember this band, or like them, or what have you.

If you like it, yay! If you hate it, boo!

I apologize readers...I didn't try very hard on this one. I'll do better next time.
