Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff

Year: 1988
Northwestern yesteryear grimy-garage-rock 101, eh? This EP debuted in the year of my birth (MCMLXXXVIII) and hasn't lost one bit of its bite in the 21 years since. This is the kind of shit that completely marred the definition of rock--dethroned the bullshit androgynoid cookie-cutter groups from the popular musicspace and paved the way for the more righteous bands stewing in the underground (and eventually more stupid bullshit pop bands that are on the radio now). You want grunge? TAD and this:

  2. Have to recommend also the new 2-cd remaster Sub Pop just put out. The sound is, in all reality, better: not "clean," of course, but more present, "in yr treats" as the kids say.

  5. Ahhhhhhhhhhh, Grunge. To me it was an exciting and hilarious 70's rock satire through a hardcore prism.

And it's coming back around any..... (checks watch - 20 years has passed since the first wave of 'true' Grunge) Yep, next summer - Grunge returns.

And if that means we get a few years of underground kids doing it like it's 1989 (Green River, Mudhoney, Tad, Nirvana, Bundle Of Hiss, DICKLESS, pre-metal Soundgarden, etc.) but all twisted up before a group of tasteless, humorless shitbags get all Stone Temple Of The Love Bone by way of Silverjam - that'll be fine by me.

It's funny. I got into Grunge back when it was still being called Pig Fuck and, NW style specifically, 'Bigfoot Rock'. When the term came into play in '89 - I saw it as a good thing. It was a new kind of brutal - even if it was using something old to do it - which, being a child of the Sabbath, Zeppelin, BOC, BTO, Deep Purple filled 70's was great.

I still drop it as an influence forgetting all about the post-Nevermind era and get roundly mocked for it by people who were probably in 5th grade and rocking Warrant tapes when the real deal went down. Grunge was VERY FUCKING DEAD by '91 and I had moved on to the trashier R&R sounds of In The Red Records - forgive me if I forget that BUSH are what 'Grunge' means to you.

Someday you'll lovingly say the same of 'Screamo' which will make some kid who thinks AFI were 'Screamo' look down their nose at you like you're a fucktard. And you will know...

  7. I was excited in 1990-91 when people said that the next big thing was going to be grunge music, hoping that Mudhoney and their comrades would get their due. Then I was bummed when a whole bunch of terrible bands came in and took the glory. Happens with every genre I guess.

  8. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden & Ess Tee Pee: good looking.
Mudhoney, Tad, Dickless: not so much.

    Nirvana: Yin Yang
