Merry Thanksgiving File Repair (aka Up Yours, Turkey)

Ok, so I went back and renamed the Sub Pop Singles Club files to eliminate any "/" or """'s form the name. Hopefully, if you were having any issues with the extraction of those files, this will remedy the situation.
If you have success or failure, please let me know in the comments below. I'm curious (like a cat).

Thank you, and look for more of the Singles Club in the next 24 hours.

All submission mp3's must be encoded at 320kbps and rougly 58mins - 65 minutes. Keep in mind that I will edit in an intro and an ending so keep your mixes as close to an hour as possible. If your last song runs over, that's fine.  Be creative and have fun.

Merry Thanksgiving - redux

So, I got 1 - 10 of the Singles Club, and that's where we will stop for today.
I promise to get another batch of these up very soon. Promise.

Go eat good food, hang out with your families, and enjoy being a decent person for once.

Rapeman - Sub Pop Singles Club 7"

Label: Sub Pop
Year: 1989

Singles Club #10
What more needs to be said about Rapeman? The Voltron-like assemblage of Steve Albini, David Wm. Sims, and Ray Washham who slashed their way through a post-Big Black world with bombast and aplomb. They, who flirted with offensiveness at every turn, and challenged the tastemakers of the underground to defend their own neurotic assumptions about what was "ok".
Pretty sure this has been posted here before...but...again, we're trying to be completists here.

Das Damen - Sub Pop Singles Club 7"

Label: Sub Pop
Year: 1989

Singles Club #9
Squeaky clean by Sub Pop standards, Das Damen was a NYC band who bounced around from Ecstatic Peace to SST to Twin/Tone, and sorta worked on each of those labels. My memory of Das Damen is as the band who opened for Nirvana at the Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill in (I believe) October of 1991...it was a school night...I remember that much.
The B-side to this 7" is a cover of The Creation's "Making Time" long before you heard that song on the Rushmore movie soundtrack.

Tad / Pussy Galore - Sub Pop Singles Club 7"

Label: Sub Pop
Year: 1989

Singles Club #8
Oh, fuck yes. This record is near and dear to my own heart, as it has Tad "covering" my favorite Black Flag song, and then Pussy Galore "covering" my second favorite Black Flag song, and since Black Flag is the greatest band of all time...then...I mean...c'mon. Essential!
This one has been posted at least twice before on this blog, but for completion's sake, here it is again.

Mad Daddies - Sub Pop Singles Club 7"

Label: Sub Pop
Year: 1989

Singles Club #7
The name Mad Daddies had me worried that this was going to be the ska entry into the Singles Club, and lord knows, there really isn't much worse in this world than ska. But, then the Peter Bagge cover art leads you to believe that this could be some Estrus Records styled cowpunk-greaser-retro thing.
So, what is it?
Would you believe blues damaged psychobilly sleaze? How about if I told you Slim Chance from The Cramps was a member of the band? Make more sense?

Afghan Whigs - Sub Pop Singles Club 7"

Label: Sub Pop
Year: 1989

Singles Club #6
Damn, I do love me some Afghan Whigs! Nobody else sounds like they do, then or now. And, that's got to be the ultimate compliment, right? It's meant to be.
This band seemed destined to be huge...and they got sorta big (a video on 120 Minutes is nothing to sneeze at! That Dave Kendall was the Ricki Rachtmann of alterna-ness back then!)...then got small again, and then came roaring back a couple years ago to the praise that had alluded them way back when. Sorta.

Helios Creed - Sub Pop Singles Club 7"

Label: Sub Pop
Year: 1989

Singles Club #5
The exact guitar freakout weirdness you have come to expect from Helios Creed. Sort of the Travis Bickle of noise rock (unless you count Steve Austin of Today As The Day as the 'Travis Bickle of noise rock"...which is a point I might concede), all negative, all abrasive, always pointing out your faults.

Les Thugs - Sub Pop Singles Club 7"

Label: Sub Pop
Year: 1989

Singles Club #4
Sub Pop reaches far afield...all the way to France for this one. Two songs of punky power pop. Although you could make a case that The Flaming Lips weren't "big" at the time of their Singles Club release, I would say Les Thugs were even less big. They had a release on Alternative Tentacles later on, but most of their material stayed on the Motherland, and we Yankees only caught a glimpse here and there.

Flaming Lips - Sub Pop Singles Club 7"

Label: Sub Pop
Year: 1989

Singles Club #3
A reminder of back when Flaming Lips weren't soundtracking commercials and headlining festivals that middle aged parents get excited about. A reminder that they used to be really skuzzy and gnarly. Sure, you can hear Butthole Surfers in their sound, but that ain't such a bad thing is it?
Good, dirty rock-n-roll that certainly fit the Sub Pop bill of that era.

Sonic Youth / Mudhoney - Sub Pop Singles Club 7"

Label: Sub Pop
Year: 1988

Singles Club #2
Ah, the ole "you cover me, I cover you" chestnut. Brilliant!
Two more heavy hitters in Sonic Youth and Mudhoney on this one. Both covers rival the originals in quantifiable "goodness". Word is, Sub Pop had sent a Mudhoney demo to Sonic Youth for their feedback, and the band was so smitten that they immediately proposed this split. Not a bad idea Sonic Youth.

Nirvana - Sub Pop Singles Club 7"

Label: Sub Pop
Year: 1988

Singles Club #1
Kicking it off with what has become a legendary release. Two songs you know and love by the band that launched a thousand imitators...Nirvana. It's hard to imagine how exciting these songs were in 1988, but if you remember than you will never forget, and if you're too young, then, I guess...something. I don't know. I can't relate to "the youth". Just try and imagine being completely entranced by something for months on end because you had never heard a band synthesize the elements of your musical past with new, heavy, noisy future sounds. It was something. Still is something really.

Merry Thanksgiving!

If you celebrate Thanksgiving (i.e. you're not some low life Euro-colonialist...or god forbid from Asia or something) then I hoist my glass to you and yours in this joyous season!
And so let's give some thanks around here, ok?
How about we give thanks to Sub Pop Records for all the great music they have provided to us over the years by posting a retrospective of the original run of their Singles Club? I mean, those are some good ass records right there! That's worthy of a few "amens" and "pass the stuffings", right?

So over the next little while I will post as many of those 7"s today until I either get sick of it, or it gets near 3:00, at which time I'm meeting some people to go skateboard. After today I'm heading out of town for a bit, but I promise to keep posting these until we at least cover the original run of releases. Deal?

GOLDEN SHOWER RADIO HOUR - Episode #003

Golden Shower Radio Hour
Episode # : 003 (FINLAND NOISE)
DJ : Jukka from Throat
Download or Listen Below

We've had a pretty good response from people wanting to guest DJ on our weekly podcast.
I was super excited to get an e-mail from Jukka from the band THROAT from Finland.
So this weeks show is pretty much all from a set he emailed to me (with text to speech intro's for the whole thing already done... nice job man).

I also received a submission from a band from Spain two weeks ago, and I promised I would play one
of their songs on episode #003. The show opens up with a song from a band called "KAITEN" from Spain.
Check out their bandcamp page here.

So without further ado... here's Jukka's notes for this weeks show. - Enjoy - Slander

Playlist for 11/23/2014

00. Kaiten - Attack Without Warning (Spain)
(Remainder of show is all Finland bands and programmed by Jukka from THROAT)

01. Radiopuhelimet – Paha Puoli
02. Fun – My Little Pony
03. Deep Turtle – Tiodt
04. Hebosagil – Ei Ole Mitaan Mihin Palata
05. Throat – Soft White Walls
06. Baxter Stockman – Non-Smoker
07. Forkboy – Sure Thing
08. Fleshpress – Golden Owl
09. Sokea Piste – Sahkoiskuja
10. Viisikko – Kellari On Turvani
11. Baxter Stockman – Kar-Air
12. Hebosagil – Nurkkapoyta
13. Submerged – Strange Places
14. Throat – Tocohara (-(16)-)

Radiopuhelimet
The grand daddies of Finnish noise rock. They’ve done it all and they tend to do it better than anyone else.

Fun
One of the longest running bands in Finland who actually use the term ‘noise rock’. Amazing live band and the records aren’t half bad either.

Deep Turtle
Classic Finnish 90s quirkiness. Jazz core, noise rock, math core, alternative funk core. Whatever you want to call it, these guys had no limits and somehow managed to get away with it.

Hebosagil
If you don’t know this band, now’s your chance to hear two songs by them. Then you should listen to them again. And again. “Nurkkapoyta” has been only released on a tape compilation, so it’s a rare treat. These guys rule so hard it’s not even funny.

Throat
Tooting my own horn here. “Tocohara” is a Shiny Grey Monotone exclusive, a cover version of a –(16)- song we recorded some years ago during a demo session just for the fuck of it. Maybe three people have heard it before this and once the internet implodes, no one will hear it ever again.

Baxter Stockman
Another band you need to hear two songs from. Simply among the top 5 bands in Finland at the moment. Vicious live band. The drummer has a fixation on men’s eyes.

Forkboy
Existed for just a couple of years (1993-1999), but managed to record a bunch of demos of their excellent AmRep meets AC/DC racket. Their complete recordings were released on CD a few years ago.

Fleshpress
If you ask me, Fleshpress is the best band in Finland. No matter what genre you want to place them in, they deserve a spot on this playlist.

Sokea Piste
Cool post-punk chill with bits of noise rock. And they manage to make it work.

Viisikko
These cats are hard to figure out. Black Flag worship, Celtic Frost worship, maybe a little Eyehategod worship. No matter which altar they bow to, they always have their asses pointed at you.

Submerged
Another short-lived Finnish noise rock blast from the past (90s). The Fudge Tunnel influences are obvious, but maybe there’s some Quicksand in there as well?

Let me know if you need more info on anything or whatever.

Cheers,
Jukka \ THROAT

SGM Movie of the week : BAD BRAINS "A BAND IN D.C."

This is a fantastic documentary about the greatest hardcore band of all time.
No matter what your feelings are about the Bad Brains may be, this documentary will answer pretty
much all of your questions.

I believe this film will probably never be officially released, from what I have read online they had some issues with the final product and no compromises could be met by the band and the director of the film.
It's been pulled from You Tube and Vimeo, so grab it while you can.

V/A - Dixie Flatline (Repost)

Label : Radioactive Rat
Year : 1994

1994 Richmond, VA was a weird place musically. Richmond had a hell of a Hardcore scene in the 80's and I would dare say that they had even better bands than D.C. did. I've seen some epic shows in Richmond as well. That scene was all but dead, and hometown heroes "GWAR" had  been a band for 8 years at this time and were in a weird transitional phase of their career. Breadwinner had been broken up for almost 2 years, and sludge metal pioneers "Buzzov-en" had recently made Richmond their homebase. The metal scene that Richmond is now famous for was just starting to happen, but would be another 8-10 years before it gained the reputation that it has today. Avail was huge, Hose Got Cable also had a good following but soon broke up after this comp was released. I believe Alabama Thunder Pussy formed a year or so after this came out.  I lived in Richmond on and off over the years, and was in the band Mulch which is on this comp but I left by the time they recorded this.

This comp is a pretty good document of what bands were happening in and around Richmond, VA at the time.  Here's what I can tell you about some of the bands...

* King Sour,  an amazing 3 piece math rock instrumental band. Their bass Player Tom Palazo (sp?) went on to play with Modest Mouse.

*Buzzov-en, what else needs to be said, you have them and Eyehategod to thank for a lot of the heavier sludge-core bands that exist today.

*Ladyfinger - Penn Rollins (guitarist for Honor Role & Breadwinner) plays drums in this band and it's pretty much what you would expect.. math rockish, somewhere between Butterglove and Breadwinner.

The rest of the comp is split up by audio vignettes throughout the record. It's not the strongest compilation, and there is some crap on here, but worth checking out for the King Sour, Buzzov-en, Damn Near Rad, and Ladyfinger tracks. - Slander

Anwar Sadat - Mutilation b/w Demarcation ep

Label: Sophomore Lounge
Year: 2012

Dudes, have you heard this band? Wait....sorry....dudes, and that one girl, have you heard this band?
They started life as many Louisville post hardcore bands do, under the influence of the Dischord Records long roster of arty, angular, and driving proto-emo and post punk bands. Which, has a particularly strong foothold in Louisville, not for good reason, but worth noting.
As they've grown into their own sounds they've seemed to pull in more of that late 90's GSL records jittery, bordering on spastic but not actually spastic, version of English post punk circa 1977 (think of Wire as distilled by The Convocation Of). Their last album has a lot of that slicing, attacking scree tempered with an underlying nod to the simple pleasures of a pop song.
But, lets hit on this particular two song release that I feel finds the band in their sweetspot, and that is taking those same elements mentioned before and putting them into a car that's driving 100mph towards a cliff. Everything about the songs is amplified and hits harder and more intensely.
If you're putting them into the Louisville music continuum then you can certainly hear the Crain and Rodan in their DNA, you will get a taste of the frantic blister of Sunspring, they don't come out of the gate quite as aggressively as Young Widows but you may recognize some of the same discordant guitar squalls, and a good bit of Metrocshifter's take on tension-and-release style hardcore shows up in the mix, and you can probably make a comparison to the latter works of Lords and Breather Resist with their chokehold (no, not Chokehold) brand of hardcore. But sadly, no Kinghorse influence here. There's always next record.

Highly recommended.

Spore - Complete Disography

Label : Taang
Year : 93-34

SPORE were one of my favorite bands to go out and see live. In the early 90's I was very active in playing music, booking bands, setting up shows, putting up bands, and touring. I got to meet and sometimes hang out afterwards with bands on tour. I would almost always put up out of town bands when they needed a place to stay. SPORE being one of many bands, but I lucked out and got to play a few shows with them and even ran into them while out on the road as well. They were always great to hook up with, and for a minute there it looked like they may have been getting signed. I remember one of them telling me about how one of their songs was going to be in a movie directed by Oliver Stone and written by Quentin Tarratino called "Natural Born Killers". I was so happy for them.. The song "Fun" made it into the film, it's in the part where Julliette Lewis is behind bars and starts beating the shit out of Tom Sizemore. Sadly it didn't make it onto the soundtrack (which it should have.. fuckers!!).. well it never happend for them, and they just went away.

I always thought SPORE was what the band "X" (the Los Angeles one) would sound like if they decided one day they wanted to be Sonic Youth. The male / female vocals being the "X" reference ( she sounds a lot like Excene at times) and the noisey feedbacking song writing structure being the "Sonic Youth" reference.

This is both LP's plus a their version of  "The Beatles" I Wan't You (She's So Heavy) which apperared on a 12" ep they put out between records and that being the only song that wasn't on either of these lps.

Blank City - Documentary

Fantastic documentary about the New York No Wave film and music scene.
Great segment on Richard Kern.

Lechuguillas - Just Me & My Dad

Label : Bandcamp
Year : 2014

Stumbled across this while digging for new sounds on Bandcamp. It's heavy, it's noisey, and it's from Austin, Texass. You can download it from  bandcamp and name your own price as well. . any questions?

The Treasures of Long Gone John

Reposted by request
The Treasures of Long Gone John is a feature-length documentary film by Gregg Gibbs that chronicles the eccentric art and musical obsessions of indie record producer and self-described "anti-mogul", Long Gone John. The product of a troubled childhood, John found success through the establishment of the record label, Sympathy for the Record Industry. During the past seventeen years he has single-handedly released over 750 records by over 550 bands and helped launch the careers of Hole, The Dwarves, The White Stripes, Rocket from the Crypt, and The Willowz, among many others.

Along the way, he has compulsively amassed a vast collection of art and pop ephemera, in addition to starting the Necessaries Toy Foundation. The film explores the work of several of the artists he collects and collaborates with, including: Todd Schorr, Mark Ryden, Camille Rose Garcia and Robert Williams. The film also features a wall-to-wall soundtrack of over 40 bands with artwork by 20 artists, including original animation and time lapse photography. The Treasures of Long Gone John is an enticing trip through the independent record industry and the Los Angeles "lowbrow" art scene.

THRALL - CHEMICAL WEDDING

Label : Alternative Tentacles
Year : 1996

I remember when I first saw Thrall at Emo's in Austin and had my face melted off by their intense loudness and abrasive sound. The Rev. Mike Hard (God Bullies) getting buck naked and acting like a possessed mad man. One of the best shows I've ever seen. and I was quite surprised at how nice of a guy he was afterwards. They just don't make em like this anymore. Great LP from start to finish. Wish I had a lyric sheet to go alomg with this one. I think Alternative Tentacles, may still have some copies of this one floating around.

LA MACHINE - Phases & Repetitions

Label : Castle Face
Year :2014

You could label it as post-punk, or you could go with good ole fashioned drug music..

These tunes are of  a recording they made in 2000. John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees, Coachwhips, and owner of Castle Face Records describes the record  "heavy on a spastic drone, with a basic groove to keep it’s haunting kraut-rock infused vibe afloat. Would Phases and Repetition have gone over well at a party in the mid-‘90s, where everyone in attendance is presumably stoned out of their tree." Also,  the drummer was in Six Finger Satellite for their reunion gigs.

This is a bass driven record, as there is no guitar, just repetitive bass lines against drums, with lots of weird effects on the vocals throughout. It does have a bit of a kraut-rock feel to it, but it reminds more of early Chrome. So if you are a fan of post-punk drone and lsd soaked weirdness, this is for you.

EL FLACO - EL DEMOS

Label : Bootleg Cassette
Year : 2013
Favorite Somg - Army Man

I have never seen a band so ripe to picked up by a major label. Especially if you take into consideration these guys were peaking in the mid 90's when the music industry was still signing bands like this. Had El Flaco had the proper people in their corner and if the had been promoted right, no doubt in my mind they would have been huge. Regularly you would hear their songs on the jukebox in places like Emo's and Lovejoy's. If they had toured more they may have caught the right ears. The songs "Unflappable" and "Sister" were both in regular rotation on most Texas radio stations.

I can't confirm what these guys wanted, cause they broke up towards the tail end of the 90's. Two full length's (Flub, and El Pee) and a couple of singles and they were done. They all were smart guys and this just may have been their thing while they were in college, I rarely bumped into these guys (except the drummer) on a regular basis to know more about them. The last year of their existence as a band were some of the best shows I had ever seen them do.

They stood out from a lot of the other bands at that time, but were still able to play with some of the noisier bands from the 90's Austin scene and people loved them just fine.

(I've seen to lost my copy of "El Pee", if you have a copy send me a message here and we can do some kind of dropbox or soulseek session.

Division Of Laura Lee - At The Royal Club

Label: Arabesque
Year: 1999

This release is posted in honor of Division Of Laura Lee putting out a new record (last year) 5 years after their last new record, which was in and of itself 4 years after the new record before it....phew. Slow and steady wins the race I guess.

So 'At The Royal Club' is a compilation of tracks from the early days of the band's career. Songs are culled from their split 7" with Milemarker, their split 7" with Impel, their debut 7" from 1997, and a few from an otherwise unreleased session recorded in 1998.

Musically, you're dealing with D.C. based post hardcore given a Scandinavian lesson in rock-n-roll efficiency (ostensibly assembled with only a hex wrench [Ikea joke!]). So, like, Frodus and Bluetip mixed with Refused. Pretty much.

(sorry about the cover art quality up there)

Gorch Fock - Lying and Manipulating

Label : Australian Cattle God
Year : 2005

Gorch Fock was another amazing band from Austin. A noise-rock super group (members of Starfish, Butthole Surfers, Boxcar Satan, Tia Carrera) that consisted of 6 (and sometimes) 7 members. Two drummers One thundering bass player, two guitar players, one baritone and sampler guy, and a lead singer that wore a sailor outfit and played the trombone. Billy Anderson (producer of bands like Melvins, Sleep, Buzz-oven, Mr. Bungle etc) called them Trombosis, because at times they do sound like Neurosis.
They would also have films projected on them while they were playing by none other than Lori Varga who also was the projectionist for The Butthole Surfers for quite a few years. I remember one show where they built a crows nest and set it up in the middle of the club while the singer did the entire set from there.

Musically it's a blend of influences like Melvins, Cows, Jesus Lizard, Chrome, Neurosis, Scratch Acid, & Alice Donut (who yours truly booked them with at CBGB ... one of my proudest moments)

I could go on and on...fuck that... how bout some music.

Here an article I wrote about then when I was living in Austin.
One of the first things I ever wrote, and full of grammatical errors.

Cosmic Psychos - Blokes You Can Trust (Documentary)

I had the pleasure of seeing The Cosmic Psychos sometime in the late 90's (97 if my memory serves me right) and they kicked my ass. They ended up staying at my place which turned into a late night maylay of drunken buffoonery. Right before we were all calling it a night, Ross had asked could he take a shower. My room mate at the time was female and I will never forget the scream she let out when she was letting herself  in to the apartment and saw Ross standing there in the living room in nothing but his speedo's. It took a few minutes of me laughing so hard to explain to her that we had a band staying with us. OOPS!! ... oh yeah and check out this awesome documentary about The Cosmic Psychos as well. There is a .mp4 of the film here if you llike - $landerbob.

James Williamson - Re-Licked

I have always loved The Stooges and let's face it, almost all of the bands that we post here on Shiny Grey Monotone have been influenced by them in some way. I was super excited to hear that James Williamson was going to record all of the songs that The Stooges wrote before they broke up. Re-Licked" features all of the songs that were never recorded for what would have been a fourth Stooges record around 1974 .These songs were never recorded in a studio and the only way they have ever been heard over the years is either rehearsal tapes or live bootlegs. Sounds like a good idea on paper.. right?

.Musically this record is great and  at times it sounds more like a lost Rolling Stones from the early 70's record than a Stooges lp. Check out "Highway Child " by The Stones and you'll see what I mean.

"Re-Licked" is worth a listen (especially if you are a Stooges fanatic like I am) and some of the tracks on here were done the justice they so rightfully deserved. The biggest problem with Re-Licked is some of the choices made as to who was going to be on the record and the songs they sang on. I will never understand why Mark Arm or especially Handsome Dick Manitoba weren't on this record. Shit, for that matter Blag Dahlia or Dave Win-dork, of Monster Magnet would have been a good choice. I get that he wanted to give these songs a new life, approach some of these songs a little different and maybe even make them sound more modern.   The main problem is that some of the female performances just didn't fully meet my expectations, to the point it sounds like a contestant from "The Voice" trying to pull off a Stooges tune in hopes to make it the finals. Carolyn Wonderland being the prime culprit, over doing it to the point of cringe. I have no issues with female singers, but everything has it's place. These songs were originally sung by Iggy and I'm not aware of many female (as well as male) vocalist's who can pull the vocals off on these songs. Hard shoes to fill, and I think a lot of Stooges fan's are not going to be very forgiving for some of the choices made here.

So for those who are interested in hearing the record in it's entirety, Album Streams has it available as a soundcloud stream. Am I wrong or am I spot on about this record? Please share your comments below.

Below is a list of tracks and vocalist who sang on them. Honorable mentions are Jello Biafra, Gary Floyd, and J.G. Thirlwell aka Clint Foetus ( I have added links to downloads of these tracks).

Big Horny Hustler - S/T

Label: Monkey Boy
Year: 1995

I moved to Austin mid 1995 after just coming off of tour with the band I was in at the time. The reason I moved there was all about the music that had come out of Austin and the over abundance of places to see bands of all genres. One of the first local bands I saw when I got into town was "Big Horny Hustler" and to say my mind was blown is an understatement. Big Horny Hustler is another in a sad long list of bands that broke up way too soon. Here is the only thing they ever released, a four song single that will leave you wanting more from this band. To this day, Big Horny Hustler is in my top ten of greatest bands to come out of Austin, and I would say they are around  number 3 on that list. The musicianship of this band is comparable to Jesus Lizard (yes, they are every bit as good of a band) .Listen for yourself and you'll see what I mean. Hands down some of the best noise rock these ears have had the pleasure of listening to.

hepa-Titus - Follow Me

Label: Amrep
Year: 2013

I am slowly getting into this band which features Kevin Rutmanis (Cows / Melvins / Tomahawk) covering the bass playing and some of the song writing duties. It's definitely different and the songs and styles are all over the place (which is a good thing). I hear King Missile and even The Residents in some of these songs. The more I listen to this the more it's growing on me (which in past experiences means that this will probably be one of my favorites with more listens). "Follow Me" being their debut LP on Amrep came out Jan of 2013 and have since put another LP out "Gettin It On". I've heard they are amazing live from a few friends in California who have seen them a couple of times. You can preview this on their bandcamp page and see if it's your cup o' tea. It's mine and me likey!! - Slander

Throat - Manhole

Label : Rejuvenation
Year : 2013

Would ya look at that Manhole on the cover.. reminds of that song by Alice Donut called "Helsinki" (go seek the lyrics out for that online).  THROAT  is a four piece from Turku, Finland. Pretty blistering noise rock here. Solid LP from start to Finnish (he he.. somebody shoot me). They are selling this for 1.00 min. on their bandcamp page. I suggest listening and  if you dig it, shell out the measly dollar. If you are on the ramen noodles budget the download is here for you cheapskates too. (*Includes a bonus track "Anal Paranoid" from the split they did with Black Sun).

ZULU AS KONO - S/T

Label : Bent Over Cowboy
Year : 1999

Zulu As Kono were a band from Austin,Texas circa 98-2002. In that short time as a band they managed to put out two full lengths and one split 7". The remaining members went on to from another band called "OH, BEAST!". I have had many a drunken night with their drummer Brandon Crowe and lived to tell about it.

If they would have stayed together, there is no doubt in my mind they would have quite the following. This being their first offering, and a limited press of 1000, it amazes me to see this pop up on some European blogs. Very Drive Like Jehu-ish at times. Zulu As Kono delivers good ole fashioned noise rock ala Texass style. Had Trance Syndicate still been around, they would probably put an album out for these guys. Included in the download is an 18 minute mp4 clip of them live at Emo's in Austin. Consisting of two bass players, a moog, two drummers at times and two guitar players, you can kind of get an idea that this isn't going to be your average noise rock fare. Dig in kids.. - Slander

Swans - Greed / Holy Money

Label: K.422
Year: 1992

Please note, this is a reissue of the two records 'Greed' and 'Holy Money' originally released in 1986.
Often described as a transitional time for the band, as they air out their dystopian industrial art damage and bleak droning haunts with some no less disturbing, and certainly no more optimistic, softer sounds
Oddly, the reissue reorders the songs from both records and jumbles them together to form a somewhat "new" album. While both records were supposedly recorded at the same time, certain tracks on both kept more a foot into the previously developed harshness of the 'Cop' era Swans, and others begin that departure into a more post-Bauhaus darkness with a P.I.L. experimentation, and the emergence of Jarboe as a major player in the sound. The sound gets more spare, with an emphasis on the discomforting silences between notes. Repetition plays a sustained role in this era of the band.
You can probably trace quite a few of your favorite bands right back to this era of Swans, whether they be Godflesh, Cop Shoot Cop, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, P.J. Harvey, Earth, Neurosis, Sisters Of Mercy, Akron/Family, Type O Negative...I mean...shit. Lots. If you were on a college campus circa 1988-1994 you saw LOTS of Swans t-shirts (usually on bespectacled gentlemen of questionable fitness), so the influence was out and about whether acknowledged or not.

Man Is The Bastard - Systematic Murder

Label : Knuckle Fucker
Year : 2014

I have had the idea of putting together a Man Is The Bastard comp for over a year now, so guess what I worked on all weekend? Treat yourself to some sonic brutality from California power violence  Trio "Man Is The Bastard " (aka Charred Remains)  In the 90's you couldn't help but run into this band, it seemed for a while there they were putting out a record almost every other month (and most of them were great). They were on a shitload of compilation records too.

This collection focuses mainly on their slower heavier side. A few fast one's make an appearance, but  for the most part most of these tracks are all about the math rock laden sludgecore that only MITB can deliver. It's hard to come up with a unique sound these days, but whenever you hear a MITB song you know automatically that it's them. Very few bands can pull it off with no guitars. Yep, MITB is a trio comprised of 2 Bass Players and one incredible drummer. If you like the heavy stuff, you'll  love this band. - Slander

Couch Slut - My Life As A Woman

Label : Handshake Inc.
Year : 2014

Who doesn't enjoy a good ole fashioned sexist album cover? One you have to make sure is never on display in the front of your record stack so you don't come off looking like some perverted weirdo. Cover aside (which I think is hilarious and guaranteed to offend), New York band Couch Slut's "My Life As A Woman" is shaping up to be one of the heaviest records of the year. Screaming lead female vocals over distorted dropped  tuning doesn't hurt either. The best elements of noise rock, metal, and even a bit of melody makes for one brutal listen. Next paycheck, this limited run of 200 lp's goes in my collection. Grab one before they are gone.. and get that penis outta my face.. will ya? - Slander

Hailing from Melbourne, Australia's HOARSE delvers an awesome 7 song self titled EP. Vocals reminding me of Stu Spasm from Lubricated Goat & Ross from Cosmic Psycho's at times. Quirky, mathy riffs at times reminding me of some of Tad's early work. Another great band from Australia. Dig in.. - Slander!
